Anhedonia

When you can't feel the good stuff

You do the things that used to bring joy, and… nothing. Anhedonia is the fading of pleasure and interest, and it can be one of the loneliest experiences — going through the motions of a life that no longer lands. It's a recognised, treatable symptom, not a personal failing.

What is anhedonia?
Anhedonia is a reduced ability to feel pleasure or anticipate enjoyment. It often travels with depression, burnout, or long-term stress, and it affects both the "wanting" and the "liking" of experiences — motivation dims and rewards stop registering.

Signs you might recognise

  • Activities you used to love feel flat or pointless

  • Little motivation to start things, even easy ones

  • Food, music, sex, connection, or hobbies lose their spark

  • Feeling emotionally numb or disconnected

  • Going through the motions while feeling nothing much

  • A sense that you're watching life from behind glass

How CBT helps
Waiting to feel motivated before acting keeps anhedonia locked in, so CBT works the other way around — small, values-guided actions that gently rebuild the brain's reward system, paired with skills to quiet the "what's the point" commentary. Feeling tends to follow action, not the reverse. The approach is patient, practical, and pressure-free.

Treatment at CBTNZ
We rebuild engagement in small, sustainable steps, tuned to your actual energy, and address the low mood or burnout underneath. Sessions are online and paced to you.

Feeling can come back — numbness is a symptom, not a life sentence.
