Perfectionism
When your standards are running you
Perfectionism gets dressed up as ambition, but for many high-achievers it's a quiet tyranny — never enough, never finished, never quite good enough to rest. If your drive comes with exhaustion and a fear of falling short, this is worth looking at.
-
Perfectionism is holding yourself to impossibly high standards and tying your worth to meeting them. Healthy striving energises; perfectionism drains, because the bar keeps moving and any shortfall feels like proof you're inadequate. It fuels procrastination, burnout, anxiety, and low mood.
-
Standards so high that "done" never feels good enough
Procrastinating for fear of not doing it perfectly
All-or-nothing thinking — anything short of perfect is failure
Difficulty delegating, resting, or celebrating wins
Harsh self-criticism over small mistakes
Exhaustion masked as being "driven"
-
CBT doesn't blunt your ambition — it frees it from fear. You'll learn to notice the perfectionist rules for what they are and choose actions guided by your values rather than dread, while loosening the rumination and over-monitoring that keep the bar impossibly high. The aim is to keep your standards where they serve you and drop the self-punishment that doesn't.
